Citizenship is the new identity believers receive through the new birth: though they remain citizens of earthly nations, they belong to Christ’s kingdom and live as citizens of Heaven.
Our conversation — our commonwealth — is in heaven, from whence we look for the Saviour. Earthly citizenship remains and is not despised, but a deeper allegiance now governs the believer: he belongs to Christ’s kingdom before any nation. The local church is the visible colony of that kingdom, an embassy of Heaven in the world, and its members live under the King’s authority while they wait for His appearing.
