Daughter of the northern dynasty, wife of Jehoram of Judah, and mother of Ahaziah. Scripture remembers her as a royal counselor, a queen mother, and the woman who seized Judah’s throne after her son’s death. The novel imagines the formidable political mind behind those public acts.
Firstborn son of Jehoshaphat and husband of Athaliah. He inherits a prosperous kingdom but rules in the way of Ahab’s house. Chronicles records the murder of his brothers, the rebellion of Edom and Libnah, the breaking of his household, and his death “without being desired.”
Son of Jehoram and Athaliah, raised between Judah’s ancient promise and the power of his mother’s northern kin. Following 2 Kings 8:26–27, the novel makes him twenty-two when he becomes king. His alliance with Joram of Israel draws him into the judgment on Ahab’s house.
Daughter of Jehoram, sister of Ahaziah, and wife of the priest Jehoiada. When Athaliah moves against the royal seed, Jehoshabeath steals the infant Joash from among the king’s sons and hides him. The novel presents her as the daughter of another Judean wife; Scripture does not name her mother.
Priest, husband of Jehoshabeath, and guardian of the hidden heir. For six years he keeps silence within the Temple. In the seventh year he gathers commanders, Levites, and the royal guard, renews covenant, and brings David’s son into the light.
Infant son of Ahaziah, rescued from the royal nursery and hidden in the house of the LORD for six years. He is seven when Jehoiada crowns him. In the novel, his ordinary childhood inside the Temple becomes part of the mystery of David’s enduring promise.
King of Judah, father of Jehoram, and architect of the northern alliance. The novel gives his political calculation a domestic cost.
Jehoram’s first Judean wife and mother of Malki-ram. She is a fictional character who embodies the resistance of the older highland houses.
King and queen of Israel. The novel follows the traditional identification of Athaliah as their daughter and treats Jezebel’s influence as both maternal and dynastic.
Ahaziah’s maternal uncle and military ally, wounded in the campaign at Ramoth-gilead before Jehu’s revolt.
Ahinoam’s firstborn and Ahaziah’s elder rival. He is fictional, created to give human form to the succession struggle within Jehoram’s household.
A commander anointed to strike the house of Ahab. His revolt joins the fates of Samaria and Jerusalem in a single violent day.
