Life is the God-given reality of existence sustained by fellowship with its Creator; in its fullest sense it is participation in the life of God through Jesus Christ.
Created life is a gift, received and dependent, never possessed in oneself — the Tree of Life displayed this from the beginning. Spiritual life is that fellowship restored through the new birth, and eternal life is the believer’s present and everlasting participation in God’s own life through the risen Christ.
Because this life is received and not self-generated, it is held by abiding in Christ, as a branch abides in the vine; and it is secure, because it belongs to the One who has already passed through death and now lives beyond its dominion.
